NATIONAL Title III Info

Title III of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 (PL 106-393) is intended to foster creativity and innovation in the selection of projects by Counties within six specified categories: Search, rescue and emergency services on federal lands; community service work camps for federal lands; easement purchases; forest related educational opportunities; fire prevention and county planning; and community forestry. Counties have broad authority to design and select projects within these six categories, and that authority is not encumbered by the imposition of burdensome regulatory procedures. Counties are provided control of funds and the option to direct the funds for use on either Title II or Title III projects (Title II is described elsewhere in this website). This experimental program will be reviewed by Congress in 2006 to determine whether it has been a success.
